Wilson keen for Stoke start

IRELAND hopeful Marc Wilson is aiming for a place in the Stoke City side straight away following his £2m move from Portsmouth this week.

Wilson has ended his five-year stay at Pompey where he was club captain and now faces the challenge of establishing himself in Stoke but he's keen to play as soon as possible.

"Hopefully I can make my debut against Aston Villa and build a good rapport with the fans straight away. But if I'm not selected, I'll bide my time until I get my chance," he says. "Glenn Whelan has been part of the international team for a while now. I spoke to him before I signed and he said it was a great club to be at."

Meanwhile, former Ireland international Jim Goodwin has turned down the chance to join non-league side Gateshead following his exit from Huddersfield Town.

Goodwin was capped once at senior level by Mick McCarthy.
