Whelan: Win is only option

Glenn Whelan believes that Ireland can forget about qualifying for Euro 2012 if they don't land all three points from tomorrow's crucial qualifier at home to Macedonia.

Ireland, Armenia and Slovakia are all level on seven points behind Group B leaders Russia.

And with the Russians facing a very tricky tie away to Armenia tomorrow afternoon, there could be a new name at the top of the table tomorrow night - and Whelan says that has to be Ireland.

"If we are serious about qualifying it's a game we have to win, so it's a massive one for us if we're to get out of this group," Whelan told the Herald.

"Our next game in the group is away to Macedonia in June, a very tough game.

"We don't want to be going out there with ground to make up, so it's vital to win this one.

"We want to get out of the group and if we're to do that we have to win games like this.

"When the draw was made you'd look at games like this, Macedonia at home, as a game you need to win and we have to make that happen."
