Whelan staking his claim

Glenn Whelan hopes that his 90-minute display against Fulham in the Carling Cup will give Stoke City boss Tony Pulis food for thought, writes Aidan Fitzmaurice.

The Dubliner has lost his place in the Stoke side in recent weeks and his appearance on Tuesday against Fulham was his first start in four games, but Whelan was pleased to get a full game under his belt.

"I did my calf in pre-season and I've struggled, I know that, but now I'm getting games under my belt I can only get better," Whelan says.

"Hopefully, me and a few of the others have given the manager a bit of a headache."
