LOUIS van Gaal is turning over every stone in a bid to find some quality defenders and his latest target is AC Milan veteran Phillipe Mexes.
The 32-year old Frenchman has played for the last ten years in Serie A and according to Italian football bible Corriere dello Sport, talks have reached an advanced stage with Manchester United officials.
Van Gaal's top target appears to be Roma centre-back Mehdi Benatia but Bayern Munich are also bidding for the Morrocan.
Mexes is in the final season of his current deal with Milan and would be allowed to leave for a small fee.
After losing badly on opening day to Swansea with a patchwork defence playing his preferred 3-man system, the Dutchman is desperate to find bodies to bolster his shell-shocked squad who will be without their marquee signing left-back Luke Shaw for the next month.
