U21s held by Danes after McGinty red

Ex-Manchester United defender Sean McGinty had a day to forget as he was sent off in the Republic of Ireland's U21 international friendly with Denmark in Fredericia.

The defender saw red five minutes into the second half for striking the ball against Denmark's Mathias Gehrt as he lay on the ground.

Alex Ferguson terminated McGinty's contract at United last month on disciplinary grounds when Tranmere Rovers called a halt to the 19-year-old's loan spell after he failed to show up for training.

"It was a moment of rashness from Sean," said King after the 0-0 draw.

"He was having an excellent match and we were capable of winning it at that point."

Instead of pushing on in search of the winner, the Irish were pegged back for the remainder of the game.

Ireland are next in action on August 14 when they kick off their 2015 UEFA U21 Championship qualifying campaign with a visit to the Faroe Islands. McGinty must wait to discover if he will be suspended for that match.

His main priority, however, is to find himself a new club.
