Trio in the mix for Irish international award

THE nominees for this year's FAI School's International Player of the Year were announced last week and the winner will be unveiled at the televised awards ceremony on March 2.

Alan Browne, Alex Byrne and Jack Doherty are this year's candidates after respective successful Centenary Shield campaigns. Cork midfielder Browne (pictured) starred for Nagle CC before earning his Ireland call-up and has since moved to English professional club Preston North End.

Defender Byrne lined out for Ireland as a representative for Yeats College in Galway and grabbed a crucial late equaliser in the 2-2 draw with England at home.

Carrick-on-Suir winger Jack Doherty did Comeragh College proud when he scored a sensational winner in the 1-0 success against Wales.

Meanwhile, the Ireland Under-15 girls international side will travel west to face Salthill Devon on Saturday. The clash in Galway will be the latest warm-up game they play as they prepare for an assault on the five-team Bob Docherty Cup in Derbyshire, England, on April 14.
