Magpies close in on Santon deal

Newcastle look set for a busy conclusion to their summer as Inter Milan full-back Davide Santon was on Tyneside today to undergo a medical with a view to completing a move.

The 20-year-old headed for England after the two clubs agreed a fee, understood to be in the region of £5million, with the Magpies search for a replacement for Jose Enrique nearing a conclusion.

Sochaux have confirmed they have received a bid from Newcastle for Modibo Maiga, 23, but insist they will not sell the Mali forward until they have found a replacement.

Santon, who was described as "the new Paolo Maldini" earlier in his career, spent the second half of last season on loan at Cesena after falling out of favour at Inter.

Manchester City have confirmed they have finalised the loan deals for striker Roque Santa Cruz and midfielder Vladimir Weiss to spend the season in Spain.

Real Betis announced yesterday they had struck a deal for Paraguay international Santa Cruz, 30, whose opportunities at City have been limited since Roberto Mancini took over because of injuries and not being in the manager’s plans from the off.

Chelsea midfielder Yossi Benayoun looks set to leave Stamford Bridge as the transfer deadline approaches.

Benayoun has seen just one minute of action for the Blues this season and looks to be surplus to requirements following the arrival of fellow midfielder Juan Mata from Valencia.

It has been reported that Benayoun would be included in an offer from the Blues for Tottenham playmaker Luka Modric and Newcastle have also been linked with the Israel captain, who moved to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool last summer on a free transfer.
