Towell hoping to be thrown in for Hibs debut against Rangers

Richie Towell would love to be thrown in at the deep end as Hibernian face Rangers tonight in front of the ESPN cameras.

The Irish U21 international completed a loan move from Celtic to Hibs yesterday and is desperate to get first-team experience at the Easter Road club.

"It is a brilliant move for me and I'm delighted to come to a big club like Hibernian," said Towell.

"Now I want to make an impact in the team and help Hibernian to climb up the table.

"It would be brilliant to be able to make my debut against Rangers; games don't get any bigger than that. Hopefully I can play some part in the game and help Hibernian win.

"The time with Hibernian will be massive for my development. I trained for the first time with the squad yesterday and everything is really positive."

Hibs boss Colin Calderwood also signed Martin Scott from Ross County and Nottingham Forest's Matt Thornhill yesterday and he is hoping that his new faces can make an impact for the Edinburgh side.

"Richie caught our attention when we played against Celtic in a 'bounce' match," Calderwood admitted.

"He will help to freshen up our squad and will be a good addition."

On Monday, Towell was named in the Irish U21 squad to face Cyprus on February 9.

Celtic, meanwhile, host Hearts this evening with 20-year-old Thomas Rogne the only recognised central defender available.

With Daniel Majstorovic out for up to three weeks with a hamstring strain and Jos Hooiveld out on loan at FC Copenhagen, the Hoops are scouring the market for a defender before the January transfer window closes in five days.
