BRENDAN Rodgers has thrown down a challenge to Liverpool's new Champions League generation to write their own chapter in Liverpool's illustrious European history against Basel at Anfield tonight.
And the Liverpool boss (left) has asked the same players to take the weight off Steven Gerrard's shoulders and step up to the plate themselves.
"It is up to the players here to write themselves into folklore by winning the game," he said.
"We can't just rely on Steven, this has to be a team performance. Others have to step up and be a catalyst for the team.
"There are not many world class players around so when you are in the team it does fall on you. We need the whole team functioning well and hope for a good performance.
"We go into this game in a much better mind-set than what we did last time.
"We need to use the whole dynamic of Anfield. They may sit back.
"If we get the patience from the team and supporters, that will hopefully help us get the result."
