Super Saints get back to winning ways

LEAGUE champions St Patrick's Athletic kept up their chase for a top-two finish at least as they came away from Derry with a hard-earned 1-0 win last night.

Two defeats in their previous three league games had seen Pats slip out of contention for the title, but Liam Buckley's men delivered last night.

Aaron Greene came up with the only goal of the game at the Brandywell two minutes into the second half, putting Pats five points behind second-placed Cork City.

The Turner's Cross side had a disappointing night as they could only draw 2-2 away to bottom side Athlone Town. Darren Dennehy put City ahead on 17 minutes only for Jon Mulroy to equalise on 41 minutes. Cork regained the lead through Mark O'Sullivan on 72 minutes, but James O'Brien made it 2-2 four minutes later.

Shamrock Rovers also stayed in contention for a European place with a 1-0 home win over Sligo Rovers, Simon Madden's 32nd minute strike proving enough.

Drogheda United inflicted more misery on Limerick, coming away from Thomond Park with a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Michael Daly (61), Gavin Holohan (67) and Cathal Brady (84). Bray earned a vital three points in their relegation fight with a 2-0 home win over UCD, courtesy of Ismahil Akinade (11 mins) and Jake Kelly (73).
