Students taught lesson by battling Bohs

Jason Byrne, Gareth McGlynn and Mark Quigley all hit the target for Bohemians at Dalymount last night as UCD were beaten 3-1.

It took 13 minutes for Bohs to get the first shot on target, with Byrne's shot'from just inside the box going narrowly over Billy Brennan's crossbar.

Brian Shorthall's header was then palmed to safety by Chris O'Connor, while Karl Moore floated a left-footed free kick just over as the Students came more into the game.

Bohs had the ball in the net shortly afterwards, but referee Anthony Buttimer ruled that Owen Heary had handled in the build-up, denying Jason McGuinness the goal after Rafael Cretaro's shot was pushed onto Heary's arm by Billy Brennan.

UCD were sitting deeper and deeper as Bohs found it hard to find the killer breakthrough.

The defence-splitting pass finally came on 29 minutes courtesy of Gareth McGlynn, whose inch-perfect delivery found the in-rushing Byrne and he'took a touch before smashing the ball into the net.

Bohs, now totally in control, smelled blood and almost scored again just after the half-hour. Cretaro's corner found McGlynn, whose shot was cleared off the line by Karl Moore.

A second goal was inevitable and it came in the 37th minute as patient build-up play involving Cretaro, Heary and Quigley saw man-of-the-match McGlynn finish into the top corner.

Byrne, MyGlynn and Heary all came close to putting Bohs further ahead as the second half struggled to get going.

UCD gave Pat Fenlon and the Bohs fans in the crowd of 890 a fright with 22 minutes left, when Paul Corry swept Chris Mulhall's pass into the bottom corner.

But Bohs were in no mood to let this one slip and on 84 minutes substitute Paddy Madden dispossessed O'Connor and fed Quigley, who'beat Brennan to clinch the win.
