Striker Burgess can still fit into Holloway plans

FORMER Ireland U21 cap Ben Burgess may get a chance to play Premier League football with Blackpool next season after boss Ian Holloway said he will consider keeping the striker at the club.

Burgess, capped four times at U21 level from 2001-2002, is out of contract with Blackpool and has technically been released, but Holloway could offer the former Blackburn Rovers man, and team-mate Rob Edwards, a new deal.

"I have had a chat with both Ben and Rob and explained our situation," said Holloway.

"We have decided not to take their option for a further year, but that does not mean that we don't want them.

"I have told them that in the coming weeks I am going to sit down with them and go through a few things for next season and if we can work something out, I will be delighted."

Burgess scored eight goals in 40 games for Blackpool last season.

Ferguson is sad to see Treacy miss out

PRESTON boss Darren Ferguson has expressed his sympathy for Dublin-born winger Keith Treacy after he was forced to miss out on an Ireland debut this week.

Treacy had been named in Giovanni Trapattoni's original 23-man squad for a training camp in Dublin and this week's friendly games at The RDS, and although Treacy reported to Dublin to be assessed by the FAI medical staff, he was unable to train or play as he had to undergo surgery on a hernia problem.

"It's a shame that Keith's international call-up had to go by the wayside," said Ferguson.

Treacy was eager to revive his international career after a falling-out with U21 manager Don Givens halted his progress.

Huddersfield show Irish trio the door

HUDDERSFIELD Town have axed three Irish players from their squad from last season.

Former Celtic man Jim Goodwin as well as midfielders Michael Collins and James Berrett have been released by the club after their failure to win promotion from League One.

Goodwin, capped once at senior level by Mick McCarthy, played only a handful of games last season and spent the second half of the campaign on loan to League One rivals Oldham.

Collins, who has six U21 caps, scored three goals from midfield, but is now a free agent, along with current U19 cap Berrett.
