TIM SHERWOOD believes other teams will be afraid of Tottenham after their valiant display at Benfica.

An impressive 3,000 fans made the trip to Lisbon more in hope than expectation after the Portuguese giants inflicted a 3-1 defeat in the first leg of the Europa League last-16 clash.

That feeling was heightened when Ezequiel Garay powered in a first-half header, but Spurs staged a late comeback thanks to a quickfire Nacer Chadli brace.

Aaron Lennon, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Harry Kane all came close to taking the match to extra-time.

The match eventually ended 2-2 and Sherwood believes his team can now kick on, starting in the return to Premier League action against Southampton on Sunday.

"As regards to what this will do for us, as much as we're disappointed, to be coming here 3-1 down and still be disappointed we haven't progressed to the next stage shows how well the boys did," he said.

"It was a real team effort, they really dug in and they showed great character and spirit. No-one's going to want to be playing Tottenham."

A trademark free-kick from Andrea Pirlo sent Juventus into the quarter-finals of the Europa League and Serie A rivals Fiorentina crashing out.

The veteran midfielder fired his effort into the top corner in the 71st minute to earn the Turin side the away goal they needed.

The free-kick was awarded for a foul by Gonzalo Rodriguez on Fernando Llorente, which saw the Fiorentina man sent off for a second yellow card. The win sent Juve through 2-1 on aggregate. Lyon went through despite going down 2-1 at Viktoria Plzen. The Ligue 1 side went into the match with a commanding 4-1 first-leg. The hosts fought back, Daniel Kolar levelling and Stanislav Tecl making it 2-1 before then missing a penalty, as Lyon went through 5-3 overall.

Valencia completed a 4-0 aggregate win over Ludogorets Razgrad as Paco Alcacer's goal earned them a 1-0 win.

AZ Alkmaar edged into the last eight, holding Anzhi Makhachkala to a 0-0 draw in Russia to go through 1-0 on aggregate.
