Sharp defies tragedy

MANAGER Dean Saunders led the tributes to Doncaster striker Billy Sharp after an emotional night at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Third-placed Middlesbrough ran out 3-1 winners after Sharp had given Rovers the lead with a spectacular 14th minute volley, but it was remarkable the home captain had taken to the pitch in the first place - his two-day-old son Louie Jacob died on Saturday.

The crowd commemorated the infant's life with a minute's applause before kick-off and Sharp scored before revealing a T-shirt bearing the words: "That's for you son."

Boro hit back to win 3-1, with goals from Barry Robson (2) and Marvin Emnes sending their opponents to the foot of the Championship table.

However, Saunders said: "I knew what was going on all week. He asked me if he could play -- he wanted to score a goal for his son and his family and he was ready to go. I couldn't really refuse."

Southampton moved five points clear at the top of the table with a 2-1 defeat of 10-man Peterborough, while second-placed West Ham United were held to a goalless draw by Bristol City.
