Settled Veron declines offer from pal Mancini

Argentina's Juan Sebastian Veron turned down a personal offer from Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini to join the Premier League club, the midfielder said.

The 34-year-old Estudiantes player said he was phoned by Mancini, a former team-mate of his in Italy and his coach at Inter Milan, to make the offer. Mancini took charge of Manchester City last month.

"I presented the offer to the directors of the club (Estudiantes) so they could consider it, maybe it appeals to them. For my part there isn't much thinking to do, my (negative) answer was instantaneous," Veron said.

"It's not possible at the moment and it's not a question of money ... My family and my affections are involved," he said.

Veron has a strong bond with Estudiantes, whom he led to the South American Libertadores Cup title in July and second place behind Barcelona in the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi last month.

His performances for Estudiantes and Argentina have seen him voted South America's top player for the last two years after a glittering career in Europe, especially Italy, though he also played for City's local rivals Manchester United.

TOTTENHAM Hotspur have renewed their interest in Miguel Veloso after watching the Sporting midfield player score in the Portuguese Cup win over Braga on Sunday.

The Portugal player has switched agents recently to secure a move after Bolton Wanderers failed to reach an agreement last summer. Barcelona are also interested in the 23-year-old. Sporting have lined up Pedro Mendes, of Rangers, as a replacement.

Blackburn Rovers have expressed an interest in Andwele Slory, the striker who is out of contract at Feyenoord this summer. He has scored four goals in 13 league appearances this season. Inter Milan have confirmed that Patrick Vieira is expected to leave, with interest from Manchester City.

Wolves are in talks to sign Fode Mansare, the Toulouse and Guinea left winger, on loan. Fulham are set to sign Stefano Okaka, the 20-year-old Roma striker, on loan for the season.

Arsenal could lose Fran Merida, the midfield player who is out of contract this summer and is wanted by Atletico Madrid.

Birmingham City hope to complete the signing of Michel, the midfield player, for £3million from Sporting Gijon. Olivier Kapo, the midfield player, expects to move to Boulogne after growing unhappy about his playing opportunities at Wigan Athletic.

Middlesbrough are trying to sign Kris Boyd, the Rangers striker, and sell Didier Digard, the midfield player, to Nice.

Sheffield United have signed Richard Cresswell after the striker's loan from Stoke City.

West Ham United and Hull City have been offered Nuno Gomes, the 33-year-old Benfica forward, and Osvaldo, the Bologna striker.
