Roddy junior to rescue in Monaghan's late escape

RODDY COLLINS JNR helped save the blushes of his dad as Monaghan United escaped from an embarrassing loss to non-league opposition last night.

Top flight side Monaghan were at home to junior side Fanad United in the first round of the EA Sports Cup but found themselves a goal down as Eunan Kelly put the Donegal side ahead in the first half and they led going into injury time, but Monaghan came back to win 2-1 with goals from Collins - teenage son of manager Roddy - and Conor Murphy.

UCD bounced back from a run of three straight league defeats with a 6-1 hammering of Waterford United at the RSC.

Cillian Morrison scored four of the Students' goals, UCD also scoring through Daniel Ledwith and a Peter White own goal, highly-rated teen Sean Maguire scoring Waterford's consolation.

Drogheda United maintained their good start to the season with a 5-2 win away to an in-form Athlone Town side.

Sean Brennan (two), Paul Crowley, Mark O'Brien and Declan O'Brien scored for United while Brian Gill and Mark Sherlock replied for Athlone.

Cork City, beaten finalists last season, started off the 2012 campaign well a 5-1 dismissal of Wexford Youths. Daryl Horgan, Kalen Spillane, Tadhg Purcell, Jamie Murphy and Davin O'Neill had Cork in control and Wexford could only score a consolation goal through Dean Broaders.

Shelbourne recovered from Friday's horror show against Shamrock Rovers by knocking out Mervue United, Dave Cassidy on target for the Reds, while Finn Harps made no mistake at home to the Mayo League, winning 2-0 with goals from Kevin McHugh and David Reilly (own goal).
