Robinson and Gavin set to take Aussie route

SHANE Robinson and Jason Gavin will swap the Irish winter for the sun of Australia later this month by joining Aussie lower league club Stirling Lions.

Robinson is a free agent following his exit from Shamrock Rovers while Gavin has agreed to leave St Pats after having the last year of his contract cancelled.

The duo had been linked with moves to other League of Ireland clubs but now it's likely that they will sign with a new club in Perth.

"I have nothing signed yet but it has all been agreed, so all going well I will head over there at the end of the month and see how it goes," says Robinson, who started last season as club captain at Rovers.

"It's only a short-term contract, for six months, so I think both myself and the club want to see how it pans out.

"I don't know much about the standard over there. The club, Stirling Lions, play in the State Premier League, which is like the First Division here, a step below the top flight.

"A lot of players seem to get picked up from the State League by the A-League teams, where people like Robbie Fowler are playing, so it could be a good chance to do well," added Robinson.

The Waterford-born player is likely to be joined by his former Drogheda team-mate Gavin in Perth, as he yesterday agreed a deal with Pats to leave the Richmond Park club before the end of his contract.

Former Derry City man Clive Delaney is yet another League of Ireland player who has expressed a wish to play in Australia next season.

St Pats man Ryan Guy is also on the move as he is expected to follow Gavin's example and leave Pats before his contract has run out.

The American-born player was this week on trial at an un-named German club in a bid to win a contract.

Pats today completed the signing of striker Paul Byrne from Bray Wanderers.
