POINTS are more important than performances for Shamrock Rovers at the moment -- and the Hoops managed to pick up all of them against Galway United at Tallaght Stadium last night with a 2-0 win.
A poor first half was soon forgotten for the home support once Stephen Rice headed Rovers ahead from Billy Dennehy's corner just four minutes into the second period. Dan Murray then sealed the deal in the 70th minute when glancing home another Dennehy corner.
A weakened Galway side were encountering difficulty defending set-pieces, and Dennehy's delivery crafted the goal for skipper Murray. The Hoops survived one late scare two minutes from time. Referee Neil Doyle awarded a penalty after Rice shoved Jamie McKenzie, but Anto Flood's venomous spot-kick rattled the crossbar.
