LOUIS van Gaal believes that his "fantastic" Manchester United side now own the streets of the city after a dramatic derby win which heaps even more pressure on Manuel Pellegrini.

United had to dig deep and come from behind to earn the 4-2 win over the champions, a win which puts them four points ahead of their local rivals and almost certainly dooms Pellegrini to the sack as they try to ensure Champions League qualification as a consolation for losing their Premier League title.

"I am very pleased for the fans of course, because they have supported us when the results were not so good and now they are very good. I'm very happy for the fans that they can walk through the streets without being embarrassed," said Van Gaal.

"We have showed that strength of character often. I have more than once given compliments to my players about that because, in all the matches, we are going until the end with a great spirit and we have shown that against City.

"The result is fantastic, we have made big steps in the last six games."
