MANCHESTER UNITED are poised to make a bid for Yohan Cabaye after Newcastle United rejected a £14m bid from Paris St Germain.

David Moyes is desperate to strengthen his midfield before the transfer window closes and the former Everton boss has been tracking Cabaye for some time, while Bayern Munich man Toni Kroos is also on the radar for the Old Trafford chief.

But Newcastle are prepared to test the resolve of other clubs who are interested in the 28-year-old.

Newcastle turned down that £14m bid from PSG as they had previously rejected a £10m offer from Arsenal, with the club valuing Cabaye at the £25m mark.

Having just spent £37m on Juan Mata, Moyes will have to work hard to persuade the United board to sanction a large bid for Cabaye, who could aid United in the second half of the season as they target an improvement in form to secure a Champions League place.

The sale of Cabaye would represent a handsome profit on the £4.3m the Magpies paid Lille for Cabaye in July 2011, but Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is not eager to see his talented French star join one of the club's Premier League rivals.

But just as it took a cheque for £35m to persuade Mike Ashley to part with striker Andy Carroll in January 2011, so too will it require a similarly outrageous offer this time around.

Cabaye has recently spoken of his contentment on Tyneside and there seems to be no particular appetite on either side to engineer a move this month.

Pardew has repeatedly warned that he may not enjoy the same lofty status at a bigger club, and with a trip to the World Cup in Brazil to come this summer, the midfield playmaker knows he needs to be playing regularly to secure his place in the national team.

Moyes is also keeping an eye on Kroos, and the United boss attended the German champion's game against Borussia Monchengladbach, where he was spotted speaking with Kroos' agent Sascha Breese, over the weekend.

Kroos' contract expires at the end of next season and it is thought he would cost around £20-25m.
