RAFA BENITEZ and his nearest and dearest will enjoy a bumper festive season with an astonishing €12m combined pay-off from Liverpool and Inter Milan burning a hole in his pocket.
After heated discussions between Benitez and Inter president Massimo Moratti into the early hours of the morning, the only issue to be decided was the size of the Spaniard's compensation.
Asked if Benitez was still in charge, Moratti said: “Yes, yes. There are no other thoughts. I have heard of and read about contacts being made with other coaches, but the club has not made contact with any other coach and will not until the situation is clarified.”
Former AC Milan manager Leonardo has been strongly linked with a move to Inter, but Moratti would not be drawn further on the Brazilian.
When Benitez left Anfield he had three years left on his contract worth £20m, but then owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett managed to reduce that number considerably.
But added to the cash he can now expect to receive from Inter, Benitez, back in his home on Merseyside, will have more than enough to make sure his family celebrates Yuletide with a vengeance.
