Pulis: Glenn needs break

STOKE CITY boss Tony Pulis says he's giving Glenn Whelan a break from first team duties so the midfielder will be fresh for Ireland's Euro 2012 campaign.

Whelan didn't feature for his club last weekend and was given a bit of time off by Welshman Pulis.

"I thought Glenn was looking a little bit tired and I thought it best to give him the week off," says Pulis of Whelan, who has made 49 appearances for Stoke this season. I know that Glenn is a big player for Ireland and that he'll probably start all three of their group games. So the last thing he needs is to be going into that championship feeling a little tired. If we can do anything to help make sure that doesn't happen then we will.

"Jon Walters is a slightly different case because he's not an automatic starter for Ireland like Glenn."
