Pats complete the capture of Bermingham Cup shock adds to Atletico woe

ST PATRICK'S Athletic have announced the signing of Ian Bermingham, with the defender becoming new Saints manager Pete Mahon's 10th signing.

Bermingham played under Mahon during his UCD days, and the Dubliner went on to play for Shamrock Rovers after the Students' relegation from the top flight in 2008.

Bermingham joins Gareth Coughlan and Derek Pender (both ex-Bray Wanderers), Conor Sinnott (ex-Wexford Youths), Brian Cash (ex-Sligo Rovers) and David McAllister (ex-Shelbourne) at Richmond Park, while striker Andy Haran is back for another stint at the club. Also re-signed by Mahon from last season's squad are goalkeeper Gary Rogers, defender Damien Lynch and midfielder Stuart Byrne. More signings are due to be announced by the weekend.

The club, however, have had to cancel their training camp in Holland, where they were due to play Rotterdam-based Leonidas on Saturday, due to the inclement weather.

Cup shock adds to Atletico woe

Atletico Madrid's miserable season took another turn for the worse last night after they were beaten 3-0 by Segunda Division strugglers Recreativo Huelva in the first leg of their Copa del Rey last-16 tie.

Elsewhere, David Silva made a goalscoring return to action for Valencia, but it was not enough to save the 2008 cup winners from slumping to a 2-1 home defeat against Deportivo La Coruna in their first leg.

Real Madrid's conquerors Alcorcon's hopes of reaching the quarter-finals remain just about alive, but they will need to overcome a 3-2 deficit against Racing Santander in their second leg, while Villarreal drew 1-1 at Celta Vigo.
