Martin O'Neill has told his Nottingham Forest side that they need to start winning back to back matches if they are to stay in the hunt for promotion to the Premier League.

Forest had the biggest win of O'Neill's nine-game spell at Forest with a 3-0 defeat of Hull City last weekend.

They remain two places outside of the playoff zone, but they are only two points off the final promotion playoff place, and a victory over O'Neill's former club Aston Villa tomorrow would boost their promotion hopes.

But winning successive games is a feat that has eluded Forest under O'Neill, all of their wins to date coming at home while they have yet to get three points on the road under O'Neill, and he's keen for that to change.

"I am delighted with the win, I am delighted to see the players who came on making a big difference to the game, influencing the result. It is really good that we have won those games here," O'Neill said.

"It was great to fight back here after defeat at Stoke. It was a big win and that is four consecutive victories here for us. The crowd were great. I was delighted with the crowd and with the support we get."

"But now we have to try - really try - to get back to back wins. That is important. It is a big, big game on Wednesday night. It is a massive match for us. The crowd will be up for it and hopefully the players will be as well," added O'Neill, desperate for the side to remain in contention for the final ten games of the regular league season.

"Things can change again, but we are in battling and we have said this before - why not?.

"These next two games are big for us, before the international break. But at least that is three points from this game and we will take those and be delighted with them.

"The players have good confidence about themselves, but it is a long road still," added the former Ireland manager.

After tomorrow's clash with Villa, Forest travel to Ipswich Town.
