O'Dea: It's 'dumb' to write off Estonians

IRELAND defender Darren O'Dea has told his Irish team-mates not to be "dumb" by assuming that Giovanni Trapattoni's side will simply waltz past Estonia and into the European Championship finals.

Many Irish fans have been celebrating since Ireland yesterday avoided teams like Turkey and Bosnia to draw Estonia, the weakest side in the play-offs.

But Leeds United defender O'Dea says now is not the time for celebrations.

"Ireland haven't been to a major tournament in a long time and with so much at stake, it would be dumb and stupid of us now to get complacent and think we've done the job before we have kicked a ball," O'Dea said.

"With the enormity of what's at stake for us I can't see any player in the Irish squad being complacent.

"We can't be too happy about the draw now, all I care about is that everyone in Ireland is happy after the second leg in Dublin," he warned, aware that Ireland will have the rare experience of being favourites in a play-off.

Dubliner Brian Kerr already has an insight into the Estonians as he led the Faroe Islands to a 2-0 home win over Estonia in the qualifiers.

"Ireland should have far too much quality, ability and experience to deal with them over two games," Kerr said.
