O'Connell makes Celtic senior debut in Turkey

IRISH U-19 defender Eoghan O'Connell made his top team debut for Celtic last night as Neil Lennon's side beat Trabzonspor 3-1 in the Antalya Cup, writes JOE McHUGH.

O'Connell replaced Virgil van Dijk in the 66th minute partnering Charlie Mulgrew in the centre of defence. The 18-year-old from Cork is in his third season at Celtic and has made a big impact this season in the first ever u-19 Champions League which saw him playing against Barcelona, Ajax and AC Milan. Celtic raced into an early 2-0 lead with misfiring strikers Amido Balde and Teemu Pukki on target before Erdogan netted for Trabzonspor three minutes from the interval. With the match in the balance Balde forced Sol Bamba into an own goal in the 57th minute to secure Celtic's victory. Ajax face Galatasaray tonight with the winners playing Celtic in Sunday's final.
