DANNY NORTH was the Sligo Rovers hero as they defeated St Patrick's Athletic 2-0 in their Setanta Sports semi-final first leg clash at the Showgrounds last night.

Pats' woe was added to when James Chambers was red-carded in the 70th minute for a second yellow card offence.

North grabbed his first goal in the 17th minute as the home side dictated the early pace. Aaron Greene dispossessed Killian Brennan and set up North, who clinically struck into the bottom right corner from outside the box.

Sligo continued to dominate and in the 26th minute North and Seán Maguire combined to create an opening, but Paul O'Conor fluffed his close-range effort.

They threatened again three minutes before the break, but O'Conor shot over again.

Pats improved on the restart and 11 minutes into the second half, Daryl Kavanagh was on the end of a move between Mark Quigley and Brennan, but lifted his effort too high.

Man-of-the-match North added his second goal as the game ticked into added time.
