No Friend-ly response for Kevin after St Mary's clash

GLENN Whelan says his Stoke City side showed their true character by bouncing back from a dismal FA Cup defeat to then take a Premier League win away from Aston Villa.

Captain Whelan criticised his team-mates after a 4-1 loss to Blackburn but the weekend win at Villa was the prefect response for the Dubliner.

"It was the reaction that we wanted. It was a big disappointment at Blackburn, not just losing but the way we lost. To come back and win - and in the last minute, was very good," he said.

"To have the character to come back from 1-0 down and win it like we did shows we do have a lot of good lads who want to win games and improve from last week.

"We spoke about last week and how when we conceded that first goal we had gone under. So we went to Villa to prove some people wrong and show we are a good side. It was important not just to win but not to lose as well. It was massive for us.

"I said a few words after Blackburn that were probably a little bit harsh, but at the time I meant it and the whole team has come out and showed they have got character."
