New era dawns for SDFL

FAI CHIEF John Delaney performed the official opening of the South Dublin Football League all-weather facilities at Ballyowen Road, Lucan yesterday.

"The SDFL do wonderful work. They are a marvellous organisation and they have a first-class home," stated the FAI boss.

The occasion was marked by an U-16 international friendly where the Republic of Ireland defeated Estonia 2-0.

A fine crowd looked on as the players did their best to cope with the strong breeze. Two goals in either half did the trick for the hosts.

They were scored by Ipswich Town's Cemal Ramadan, both coming from crisp right-footed strikes that nestled in the bottom left-hand corner.

Ireland were fully in charge of the contest, and Ramadan could well have had a hat-trick only for a first-half save from Andreas Vaikla.

The sides will meet again tomorrow at Swords Celtic (11.0am).
