Mulvenna hat-trick seals European berth for Drogs

DROGHEDA United made sure of the runners-up spot and a Europa League berth after an impressive 4-1 victory over Bohemians at Dalymount in the Airtricity League Premier Division.

The Drogs were in front after 24 minutes as Tiernan Mulvenna raced onto Sean Brennan's sublime through ball and he finished emphatically.

Mulvenna scored again 20 minutes later but Evan McMillan pounced on Gabriel Sava's error on the stroke of half-time to cut the deficit.

Alan McNally's close-range header and Mulvenna's tap-in, for his hat-trick, sealed all three points.

St Patrick's Athletic beat Cork City 1-0 at Richmond Park as they copper-fastened third position.

Pats assumed control but struggled to make meaningful chances with the Rebels set up defensively.

It took 56 minutes for Pats to get their winner and it came through a likely source as Christy Fagan contolled in the area before slipping the ball past Mark McNulty.

Shelbourne missed out on a place in next year's Setanta Cup as they could only draw 1-1 with UCD.

It all started so well for Shels with the skillful David Cassidy opening the scoring after just three minutes.

That lead didn't last long when Hugh Douglas headed home.

In the battle of the bottom sides, Dundalk beat Bray Wanderers 2-1 at Oriel Park, Michael Rafter and Barry Conlon scoring the goals to give Dundalk a timely boost ahead of their promotion/relegation playoff game with Waterford United.
