Moyes reaches out to Rooney

INCOMING Manchester United manager David Moyes has reached out publicly to former protégé Wayne Rooney – raising hopes the striker could end up staying at Old Trafford.

Moyes, speaking at an event last night, praised Rooney as "one of the best players in the world".

Rooney has handed in a transfer request, but it's thought that Moyes will meet the England international later this week to encourage him to remain in Manchester.

"Wayne Rooney was and is an exceptional talent," Moyes said. "When we sold him to Manchester United, he was fantastic. When he left Everton, he was already an outstanding player.

"Some of the things he used to do in training, we would stand back and look at each other, and say, 'How did he do that?' You would see the staff exchange glances as if to say, 'Can you believe that?'

"He was brilliant, some of the stuff he did."

Meanwhile former Arsenal man Cesc Fabregas is being linked with a shock switch to United.

Alex Ferguson has reportedly sanctioned a move for the Barcelona man as his last major transfer deal.
