Mick McCarthy will ask Conor Hourihane to move from midfield to defence and solve his left back dilemma in tonight's friendly at home to Bulgaria.

And the Irish boss has also backed his side to get the wins they need to stay on course for Euro 2020 qualification.

McCarthy has picked the same back five for all five games to date but he has to change for the next qualifier, away to Georgia, as Enda Stevens is suspended.

Matt Doherty remains an option but McCarthy will ask Hourihane to play at left back tonight to see if he can deliver.

"He has a wonderful left foot. Wouldn't it be amazing if he played really well and everybody was 'wow'? If he doesn't, nothing ventured, nothing gained," McCarthy said, aware that Denmark's slip-up in Tbilisi has given his side hope.

"We remain unbeaten and I always have confidence that we can win games."
