McDonnell favourite for vacancy at Shels

SHELBOURNE'S board will spend the weekend sifting through CVs from interested parties following Alan Mathews' decision to step down yesterday, with former Shels assistant boss John McDonnell an early favourite to land the job, writes Aidan Fitzmaurice.

Following a run of form which saw Shels drop to the bottom of the league table with six points from 13 games, Mathews decided to resign.

Shels have appointed first-team coach Kevin Doherty as caretaker. Mathews, who succeeded Dermot Keely at Shels in 2010, led the Reds back to the Premier Division at the end of the 2011 season and they also reached an FAI Cup final under his stewardship.
