Mathews eyeing promotion push

ALAN MATHEWS has returned to Shelbourne after an eight-year break and the Dubliner's immediate task is to revive the Reds' bid for promotion.

Shels have been looking for a long-term manager since Dermot Keely quit in May after a 2-1 defeat to Wexford. Coach Colin O'Neill has been in charge as caretaker since then and he impressed in the role as Shels were unbeaten in six games. However, the board have now moved to hire Mathews as manager -- he was previously as Shels as assistant to Keely with the Shels side which won league titles in 1999 and 2002.

"Alan's objective is to return the club to Premier Division status as quickly as possible," the club said following his appointment. Shels are currently fifth in the league table, 13 points behind leaders Derry City.
