JUAN MATA will carry a £40m weight and the hopes of worried Manchester United fans on his shoulders after David Moyes moved to seal a January deal for Jose Mourinho's unwanted midfielder.

United crashed out of the League Cup semi-final second leg at Old Trafford last night, going down on penalties after extra time left them locked 3-3 with Sunderland.

The Reds will get a badly needed boost if Mata is signed in time for next Tuesday's home Premier League clash with Cardiff.

Mata is believed to have missed training yesterday and is said to have indicated to friends he was destined for Old Trafford. Chelsea are belived to have accepted the bid and the 25-year-old was due to travel to Manchester today to complete his medical.

Chelsea would bank a far larger fee than they could hope to attract from Barcelona or Paris St Germain.

And while it would be unusual for them to sell to a fellow Premier League giant, Mourinho doesn't see United as a threat in this season's competition.
