EVERTON boss Roberto has insisted that Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy is not for sale

McCarthy has been linked with Manchester City after their failure to sign Aston Villa’s Fabian Delph. However, Martinez, who worked with the player at Wigan Athletic before they both joined Everton two years ago, is determined to hold on to his best young talent.

“He is not for sale,” the Spaniard said of McCarthy at the Barclays Asia Trophy in the Singapore National Stadium yesterday.

“James McCarthy has been a top performer in the last few seasons and at the age of 24, he has already played over 300 games. He has young legs, brings a lot of energy and he is a vital part of our squad.”

Everton continued their winning start to the pre-season with a penalty shootout victory over Stoke City in the opening match of the Premier League Asia Trophy, deserving victors of a competitive contest that ended scoreless.

Everton advance to Saturday’s final against Arsenal who won 4-0 against Singapore Select XI.
