Manchester United are 'desperate' to sign PSG star Edinson Cavani and may still move for the player even if Angel Di Maria's proposed move to the French club falls through.
Having completed their fifth signing of the summer by snapping up Argentina and former Sampdoria and AZ goalkeeper Sergio United are still eyeing a sixth who could be, according to the Daily Star, Cavani.
The PSG forward has been on the wanted list for some time and could be trading places with Angel Di María.
Apparently it would take £60 million or Di María plus £15 million to persuade Paris Saint-Germain to release the Uruguay striker but it may take a transfer request to oil the wheels of the deal and bag a player the Star says is 'desperate' to move to Old Trafford.
Cavani came on as a 65th-minute subsititute for PSG in their International Champions Cup game against Chelsea at the Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina on Saturday night. He scored his penalty in the shootout after the 1-1 draw but had to watch as Thibaut Courtois saved and then scored from the spot to clinch victory. The striker was making his first appearance since the Copa America, a tournament in which, during the match against Chile, he was the victim of a gross violation by Gonzalo Jara.
After Sunday's stories that Michael Carrick was being targeted by Internazionale and Newcastle, another Manchester United midfielder is attracting reports of potential transfer bids. This time it is Ander Herrera who, according to Metro, is being lined up by both Atlético Madrid and Valencia despite having been at United for only a year.
Such tittle-tattle doesn't tally with his comments about being excited by the midfield recruits which he made to United's website over the weekend.
"I always want to play with the best players and Bastian is one of the best in the world. I'm sure I am going to learn a lot of things from him and we have also Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney - players with a lot of experience who can help the young players", he said.
"When you want to have a good season, it's not just with 11 players. There are injuries. I wish there were not, but there are. There are good and bad moments for the players, so everyone is going to be involved in what I think will be a very good season."
Back to Metro for news of United's willingness to gazump Manchester City and pay £10.6 million to trigger Adama Traore’s £10.6million release clause at Barcelona.
Adama Traore is the subject of interest from United, Man City and Bayern Munich
The 19-year-old right-winger (not to be confused with the Monaco signing of the same name), who has made one first-team appearance in the league during two seasons' service with Barcelona B, has been on City's radar for the past 18 months but United are said to be ready to make a decisive intervention.
Pep Guardiola, however, is also said to be willing to meet the rapid teenager's release clause to take him to Bayern Munich.
