MIDFIELDER Gareth O'Connor has swapped a relegation battle for a possible league medal after securing a move from Drogheda United to St Patrick's Athletic.
The former Bournemouth and Burnley man was a key figure for Pats last season, highlights including a goal against Steaua Bucharest in their Europa League preliminary tie.
But when his contract ran out at the end of the season he was unable to agree terms on a new deal with Pete Mahon and the Dubliner moved on, signing for Drogheda.
But now Pats have come back for the Cabra lad and Mahon agreed a deal with Drogheda yesterday to sign O'Connor, initially until the end of the season. O'Connor was banned for Drogheda's game at home to Bohemians on Friday but as that game was abandoned due to a floodlight failure, his suspension carries over.
Mahon is also on the verge of signing former Athlone Town goalkeeper Chris Bennion as back-up for Gary Rogers.
