Lions and Rams in battle
for Best

MILLWALL will compete with Championship rivals Derby County to sign Ireland striker Leon Best on loan.

The 27-year-old still has a full year left on his contract at Blackburn Rovers but he has been told that he has no future at Ewood Park. He spent part of last season on loan to Sheffield Wednesday and has not been part of the pre-season plans under boss Gary Bowyer.

Blackburn placed Best on the transfer list some time ago and have told clubs that he is available but they have been frightened off by the player's wages, estimated at £30,000 a week.

Derby boss Steve McClaren is keen on Best and would like to add him to a Rams squad aiming to follow up on last season's near miss by winning promotion to the Premier League, but Millwall have also been linked with the former Newcastle United man.

Derby are waiting to see what happens with current Ireland cap Conor Sammon. He remains under contract with the Rams but has been linked with a move away, Mick McCarthy eager to bring Sammon to Ipswich Town and add him to a squad which already contains Stephen Hunt and Daryl Murphy. Sammon has played little part in Derby's pre-season campaign and featured for their second string in a friendly game earlier this week.
