Lennon set to size up Shittu

Neil Lennon has left the door open for Danny Shittu to join Celtic. The Nigerian defender was released by Bolton in midweek and is free to sign for any club outside of the transfer window.

The Nigerian defender was released by Bolton in midweek and is free to sign for any club outside of the transfer window.

Despite making 11 signings before the transfer window closed, Lennon would still like to add an experienced defender to his side and has been in contact with Shittu.

The Celtic boss confirmed: "We are hoping to bring Danny up and just have a look, but I am a little worried about squad congestion.

"Danny is also a wee bit concerned about picking up an injury while he is out-of-contract and I understand that.

"We'd like to have a look at him, though, just to have a look at his level of fitness.

"However, he's been away playing with Nigeria and was involved in the World Cup, so I don't think that will be a major issue.

"We have a bounce game arranged for next week anyway."

Despite his summer signing spree Celtic made a net profit during the transfer window thanks to the sales of Aiden McGeady, Artur Boruc and Stephen McManus.

Lennon will have money to spend in January but will be looking to fine tune his squad rather than go through another major overhaul of players.

He added: "If we're in a position of power we'll look to strengthen again and try to keep improving the squad. And even if we're not going so well, we'll probably still look to strengthen.

"However, there won't be the shift change like we had this summer because we are pretty happy with the squad we've got now.

"We just felt it needed a bit of rejigging. A lot of players have gone out the door as well.

"There were a lot of phone calls and deals done in the summer -- and there were the ones that got away as well. There was a lot of work involved.

"I always remember Gordon Strachan saying he was glad when the window shut and I can understand that now.

"There is no more speculation and now you can work with a settled squad."
