Superb Walsh frustrates Crystal with class saves

Waterford Crystal.............................................1

Carrick United...................................................2

Two classic counter attack goals from Ian Cleary and Wayne Fitzgerald minutes before half time gave Carrick all three points against Waterford Crystal.

When Crystal took the lead, courtesy of a magnificent Liam Coady header, it looked as if Crystal could bring Carrick's long unbeaten record to an end. However Carrick showed their class as they came from behind to snatch the points.

Play got bogged down somewhat in the middle of the park until the 39th minute when Crystal produced a good attacking move, Martin Tynan was fouled by Alan Redmond and Keith Sheridan floated over the free kick from the left and Liam Coady headed the ball over Adrian Walsh from sixteen yards to give Crystal the lead.

However Carrick equalised three minutes later. Wayne Fitzgerald played the ball out wide left to Anthony Power who skipped past the Crystal right full back Conor Fell before picking out Ian Cleary and his bullet like header flew past the helpless Derek Hearne from sixteen yards.

Two minutes later Carrick went in front, Ian Cleary cracked in a volley from thirty yards which came crashing back off the Crystal crossbar but the ever alert Wayne Fitzgerald was in the right place to tuck the ball into the back of the net from six yards. As the second half got under way, Carrick were pushed back by Crystal, attack after attack followed from Crystal and their pressure paid off on seventy one minutes when defender John Walsh was forced to trip Andrew Power inside the box.

Keith Sheridan took the penalty and he struck it well but Adrian Walsh's dived low to his left to make a brilliant save.

Martin Tynan could not believe his eyes when Adrian Walsh somehow managed to save his point blank pile driver from eight yards.

Deep into stoppage time the Carrick goalkeeper saved again from Paul Quilty who turned inside the penalty area before bring the very best out of Walsh once again.

Twenty four points from a possible twenty four shows the quality in this Carrick side and surely nobody can stop them winning the Premier league.
