No defence as Galway make tame Oscar exit

Having won their two group games away from home the Galway League side finally got to play at home in the Oscar Traynor Cup, but a dreadful performance saw them exit the Inter League competition in a rather timid fashion when going down by 3-1 to the Defence Forces at Terryland Park in a midweek quarter final.

It was a contest when they seldom held the upper hand and opening half goals by Michael Comerford and Tony Griffins gave the visitors a well merited opening half 2-0 advantage.

The introduction of Seamie Crowe, who was surprisingly left on the bench until the interval gave the home side an edge for a spell on the restart, but the reality was they didn't have the ability or spirit to make a recovery.

A late Barry Moran header gave them some reward, but a Stephen O'Donnell cracker in the final minute maintained the Defence Forces two goal advantage as they stretched the lead to 3-1.

They will now face the Wexford League in a home semi final after the South East side also caused an upset with a 1-0 win over the AUL in New Ross on Saturday.

Corrib Celtic caused a huge upset in the Michael Byrne Cup as they registered a 4-3 penalty shootout success over NUIGalway after the game finished level at 2-2 following extra time. Chris Greaney got both their goals, while also converting a spot kick along with Shane Concannon, Pierce Duffy and Ronan Newell.

Dermot Ward notched an extra time winner as his header saw Mervue United B defeat neighbours East United 1-0 in Fahy's Field, while the club's A side were 5-3 winners over Loughrea as Colie Kelly (2), Stephen Larkin, Summit Chawla and Miko Nolan all hit the target.

Tuam Celtic have qualified for the Jack Lillis Cup Final as a late Niall O'Grady header gave them a 1-0 home win over Knocknacarra.

A second half brace by Pat Huban helped Mervue United defeat Cork City by 2-0 in the FAI Youth Cup, while Salthill Devon were 3-0 winners over Granville in the FAI Under 17 Cup as Eamonn O'Donnell (2) and Tony Ward notched the goals.
