The progress of two recent graduates of the FAS/FAI Women's Soccer Training Course highlights the opportunities this unique initiative offers.
Stephanie Bowden and Patricia Cleary are currently undertaking a degree course at Carlow IT after successfully completing the FAS/FAI programme.
The programme enables footballers who have left school and are interested in developing a potential career in football or the sports and leisure industry with an opportunity to enhance both their football skills and education level.
The programme also enables females to develop the skills and knowledge required to enhance employment prospects in the sports and recreation industry.
It provides a potential pathway into third level education and scholarships, while also offering players the chance to experience the rigors and demands placed on players in the professional and semi-professional game.
Through the FAI, participants will gain Introductory to Soccer Coaching badges -- Kick Start 1, 2 and Goalkeeping.
Meanwhile, they will also completing additional modules such as Exercise and Fitness, Studio Instruction, Anatomy and Physiology, IT, Sports & Recreation, Communication, Diet & Nutrition, personal fitness and special populations.
Bowden and Cleary are now full-time students in Carlow IT where they are studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Sports and Exercise in soccer, a prestigious new course which was recently launched in conjunction with Carlow IT and the FAI. Another student of the FAI FÁS training course was Emma Reilly who has received a soccer scholarship in Tennessee in the USA.
Students are prepared for FETAC qualifications in health and fitness and if a certain standard of performance is achieved during this phase students then prepare for the ITEC Gym Instructor Diploma. Qualifications such as these allow students to secure full or part time employment in fitness centres, teach their own classes on a freelance basis or work as fitness consultants to teams.
