Vianney Boys were the overwhelming favourites to win this one, their oponents Boca Seniors are lying at the base of the table below them and only picked up their first points of the season last week.
The final scoreline suggests a comfortable victory for Vianney but I have to admit that Boca's performance left me scratching my head in wonder at their dismal league campaign. This is a decent side.
Having said all that, Vianney still dominated for most of the first half. Wes Grant almost gave them the lead on five when he skipped down the left and fired just over from an acute angle.
The home side took the lead on 23 and a fine individual piece of skill from John Duignam was what got them on the board.
Duignam latched onto a long clearance and had two defenders dizzy befored he fired home from the right.
The floodgates were about to open you felt but in fairness to Boca they defended resolutely and held Vianney to that goal until the break. Ger Kennan almost doubled the lead on 24 but his deft flick from a Grant feed just cleared the upright.
Five minutes later Eoin Browne curled a delightful free from 25 just wide of the post and 'keeper Jim Reynolds denied Andrew Magee on the half-hour mark.
At the other end, Matthew Doyle failed by a whisker to make contact with a James Dunne cross when all that was reuired was a touch.
Vianney resumed as they had left off and Dylan Dwyer just missed the target from a Duignam cross on 56.
Boca kept believing but they had trouble penetrating the Vianney defence excellently marshalled by Jimmy Dunne. On 73 the game was up when Dwyer flew down the right leaving defender after defender in his wake. His pull-back was perfect and Magee slotted home.
Dwyer iced the cake and got the goal his performance so richly deserved when he got to a Keenan poke forward just before Reynolds and headed home to send Vianney into the hat.
