dovydais ends cashin cup bid

Wicklow................................ 0

Cavan..................................... 1

Wicklow's hopes of reaching the knock-out stages of the Under 12 SFAI Jim Cashin Cup ended when they suffered a second defeat of the competition.

After 1-1 draws away to the Midlands League and home to Kildare, a 2-1 loss to Drogheda had left the Garden County side with an uphill task to qualify.

But Cavan went top of Group 2 in the Leinster section with a narrow 1-0 success at Shamrock Park in Rathnew last Saturday afternoon.

However, Wicklow spurned half a dozen glorious scoring opportunities in game that they should at the very have least drawn.

No even a staggering 13 minutes of time added on in the second period could see them forge the elusive equaliser.

Having claimed home wins over Carlow (3-2) and the Midlands (2-0) as well as an away 1-1 draw against Kildare, Cavan continued their unbeaten run with the vital score in the 50th minute.

In a left to right wing move, substitute David Brady linked with John Fitzpatrick to set up another reserve Dovydais Zealauskas.

His initial shot was superbly blocked by Adam Hayden.

But the ball rebounded to the striker who somehow squeezed the ball in low from a tight angle.

Hayden had done well earlier in the half to deny Fitzpatrick by spreading himself well.

Just before falling behind, livewire home sub Dáire O'Conchubhair flashed a 20-yard drive just when.

He then turned provider in the 57th minute to set-up Joshua Moody who poked wide from six-yards.

O'Conchubhair was again the provider in the 59th minute. His sliced effort fell to unmarked Daniel O'Hare who failed to find the target from eight-yards.

In injury time, after Cavan's Jordan Reilly has suffered an ankle injury, O'Conchubhair fed Aaron Healy who scuffed wide while O'Conchubhair had the ball taken off the line by Daire McEnroe.

Chances were few and far between in the tame first half.

Cormac Boyle blasted over when well placed early on for the visitors while Darren Beevor's free-kick for the hosts soon after drifted wide.
