Byrne's premier passion

FORMER Celtic and Bohemians ace Paul Byrne a genuine passion to the game and it's easy to see how that infectious enthusiam rubs off on his charges.

Premier Soccer Skills claims Paul is an alternative to the FAI Coaching programme while also providing coaching fundamentals that will span across a wide range of field sports such as gaelic football, hockey and rugby.

Premier Soccer Skills was founded in England by Roger Williamson and John Cartright who believed that there were more beneficial methodologies available to the current FA thinking at that time.

Now, Premier Soccer Skills has a global presence and Irish licecensee holder Byrne is convinced that the game of association football in Ireland has much to benefit from his programme.

"What John and Roger wanted to do was to get back to the basics of what essentially was street football which is now really a thing of the past. The concept is to work small spaces based around small sided games," states Byrne.

"This allows the kids get more touches and thus build up more confidence in their own abilities," added Byrne who made his debut for Oxford as a 16-year old alongside Ray Houghton. Byrne is looking to put on more coaching seminars to build up the coaching strength of Premier Soccer Skills and already he has over 1000 kids committed to Summer Camps this summer for a very reasonable €99 which includes Umbro gear and food on a daily basis.

"The coaching courses take two days but coaches can then progress to add higher levels," states Byrne.

And, people who are out of work for more than three months can also sign up for coaching thanks to the programme now being recognised by FAS.

"Irish kids have a lot of passion and a lot of heart and what Premier Soccer Skills is looking to do is to develop players that are technically better and marry innate passion with improved technical ability."
