Battling Donagh's come up short

Rivermeade FC.........................4

St Donagh's Celtic.....................2

When you go a goal behind at fortress St Margaret's your hopes of gaining something from the fixture are slim to say the least. Go two down and have your team reduced to ten? Forget about it!

That's the situation that St Donagh's found themselves in but with credit to them they made a mighty fist of things and this cracking Amateur Cup tie lay in the balance right up until a few minutes from time.

The home side were ahead after two minutes when Gary Scott converted from the penalty spot after a hand ball on the goal line. Martin Powell doubled the advantage on 27 when he completed a slick move by slotting home from twelve yards.

At this stage it looked as if it might be a damaged limitation job. Rivermeade were bossing the midfield and stringing some delightful passing movements together.

Against the run of play however, Evan Cooling got one back with a clever back heel after a mix-up in the Rivermeade rearguard.

The home side continued to dominate and Graham Murtagh went close before he looked like he had finally put the game to bed when he fired home from the edge of the box after Paul Lumo had set him up with eight left on the clock.

Donagh's came back though when Danny McGuinness got a toe to a long Niall Nowlan clearance just before Paul Murphy could get there in minute 84.

With three minutes remaining Lumo was again the provider when his excellent cross from the right end line was volleyed home by David Hardy at the far post to send Rivermeade through.
