ashford claim first honours

Ashford Rovers have the honour of being the first Heatons/Sportsworld WDSL team to win an 11-a-side League title in the 2009/10 season.

After recent results went in their favour, they claimed the Under 13 Division 2 crown after taking maximum points from eight of their nine games.

Rovers also beat the other five teams in their section at least once, with no less than 11 of their 13 strong panel featuring on the score-sheet at some stage.

Ashford kicked off the campaign last September with a bang, beating Ardmore Rovers B by a 9-2 score-line.

Colm Doyle led the way at Ballinalea Park by netting four times.

Adam Hill, Zac McAuley, Jack Taylor, Robert Clarkson and Vinnie McCann all chipped in with singles.

They was followed by a first away success. Hill bagged a brace at Whitegates in a 3-0 triumph over Wicklow Rovers C with McAuley also on the mark.

Ashford finished out the month by registering their third win. Hill and Colm Doyle both registered doubles in the 7-0 home victory over Greystones United C.

Ferdia Fallon-Verbruggen, Karl Turner and Fintan Ryan also scored their first goals of the season.

But their only blip came at the start of October as, despite Ryan's effort, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Wicklow Town at Ballinalea Park.

But they bounced back to defeat Newtown Juniors 4-1. Ryan, Colm Doyle, Zac Fleming and Hill shared the visitors tally at the Matt Kelly Memorial Grounds.

They got back to winning ways at Ballinalea Park by overcoming Wicklow Rovers 6-1.

Declan Doyle fired in a treble with Ryan, Taylor and Turner finding the net.

November saw their biggest victory as Taylor helped himself to a hat-trick as Ashford defeated Greystones 9-0.

Both Declan Doyle and Colm Doyle scored twice with Ryan and an Own Goal accounting for their total.

They then left Finlay Park with all three points courtesy of scores from Clarkson and Taylor in a 2-0 away success over Wicklow Town.

Ashford finished off 2009 with a convincing 6-1 home win over Newtown with the trio of Clarkson, Colm Doyle and Declan Doyle all scoring twice.

With one fixture remaining away to Ardmore at the Ballywaltrim Recreational Park in Bray, their league record is played nine; won eight and drawn one.

In total, the team have scored 47 goals, conceded just six and kept ix clean sheets.

They are also unbeaten in four away games.

The full Ashford Rovers squad consists of: Aaron Cullen; Conor Ivers, Fintan Ryan, Jack Taylor, Karl Turner, Declan Doyle, Colm Doyle, Adam Hill, Zac McAuley, Robert Clarkson, Vinnie McCann, Zac Fleming and Ferdia Fallon-Verbruggen.

They are managed by Andy Hill with Francis Turner being the Assistant boss.

* The runners-up position is still undecided. Newtown are currently in second place, with 18 points and one match away to Ardmore still to play.

Ardmore are in third spot on 15 points. And still have to travel to Wicklow Town as well as facing Ashford and Newtown.
