Jagielka signs one-year extension

England defender Phil Jagielka has signed a one-year contract extension with Everton, the Premier League club have announced.

Toffees captain Jagielka, who has won 36 caps for England, will now remain at Goodison Park until the summer of 2018.

"It's always nice to feel wanted," Jagielka told evertontv.

"Being rewarded with the extra year gives me that motivation to keep striving to get better and to keep going for as long as possible.

"It wasn't the longest negotiations ever - it only took a couple of minutes rather than hours.

"I love it here, I want to stay here and thankfully enough the club felt the same.

"The contract was drawn up and I popped back after a little holiday to sign it.

"Now I look forward to getting back for pre-season."

Jagielka has proved an enormously popular figure at Goodison Park since joining Everton from Sheffield United for £4million eight years ago.

The 32-year-old, who succeeded Phil Neville as captain two years ago, has made nearly 300 appearances for the club and was named Everton's player of the season last term.
