Irish U19s beat holders Ukraine to revive hopes of making finals

IRELAND'S hopes of making the UEFA U19 Championship finals were revived slightly as they beat defending champions Ukraine 1-0 in their second elite-phase qualifier yesterday despite having to play almost the entire second half with only 10 men.

Chelsea's Conor Clifford stepped up to coolly slot home the winner from the penalty spot on 60 minutes.

Manchester United's Robbie Brady, who was singled out for some rough treatment, was dubiously dismissed two minutes into the second half after being shown a second yellow following a verbal altercation with an opponent.

Ger Hanley made a marvellous save from point-blank range on 67 minutes to preserve Ireland's lead and he made another five-star block in the closing stages after John Dunleavy had been denied by a goal-line clearance.

With England beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-0, Ireland must now rely on Ukraine beating England by a single goal and they themselves must defeat Bosnia and Herzegovina by more than four goals to secure their passage to the finals in France.
